It is another juggernaut in the video game sector which is about to be bought by a member of GAFAM. Indeed, observers sensed an acquisition of Electronic Arts by Amazon.
But be careful, because not everyone seems to have heard the same hallway noise…
An impossible redemption?
Last January, Microsoft surprised the world by formalizing the takeover of Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion. This was not the first attempt by the American giant since ZeniMax Media (Bethesda Softworks) also went under the Xbox flag in 2021. And as we know, everything is moving very quickly in the gaming industry.
According to a first report by USA Today, Electronic Arts was about to come under the command of Amazon. The formalization was even to take place later that day on August 26, 2022. A real earthquake that would allow the online sales giant to acquire major licenses such as Battlefield, Mass Effect, dragon age or Fifa (who will become EA Sports FC).
A rumor immediately denied
However, other rumors came to thwart the scoop revealed by USA Today. In fact, the chain CNBC claims that Amazon has no plans to make an offer to buy Electronic Arts. Last May, a possible takeover of EA had already made the headlines. Among the companies interested were, for example, Apple, Disney and of course Amazon. But nothing concrete had filtered out at that not-so-distant time.
It must be said that for several years now, Amazon has been trying somehow to find a place for itself in the video game industry. Alas, there have been many failures… Therefore, a hypothetical takeover of Electronic Arts would have enabled the firm founded by Jeff Bezos to become a heavyweight in this very competitive sector.
But according to the latest data in our possession, the takeover of EA by Amazon should ultimately not take place… It may only be a postponement!
