The e-commerce giant will spend 3.9 billion dollars to afford the care network and establish a little more in the health market.

Health seems to be the new Eldorado for technology companies and all seem to want to invest massively in the field.

Tech giants are investing heavily to diversify into healthcare

Apple has been involved in the sector for many years with the launch of the Apple Watch connected watch, and has since undertaken numerous actions in partnership with various American health institutes. Google also wants to develop in this sector and is preparing for this year a tool for making medical appointments inspired by Doctolib.

Amazon is more advanced on the issue with the launch of many services such as Amazon Care, a telemedicine platform, or even a prescription drug delivery service, only available in the United States.

The online sales giant is accelerating today by announcing the acquisition of the company One Medical for an amount of 3.9 billion dollars.

A subscription service to facilitate access to care for American patients now overseen by Amazon

One Medical is a company created in 2007 and offers its customers a subscription billed at $199 per month, including access to partner nursing homes in 125 American cities, as well as a teleconsultation service accessible 24 hours a day via a smartphone app. However, consultations are not covered by this subscription and are invoiced to the patient’s health insurance.

With this takeover, Amazon aims to ” transforming healthcare and improving outcomes by combining One Medical’s human-centered, technology-powered model and exceptional team with Amazon’s customer obsession in the words of Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of One Medical.

One Medical is however not yet a profitable structure, it notably has a loss of 254 million dollars, despite a turnover of 623 million dollars and 767,000 subscribers. The arrival of Amazon and its almost unlimited means should help the young company to develop more quickly, while benefiting from its work in artificial intelligence and data management.
