Amazon’s Kindle Scribe gets new features

Amazon has rolled out an update for its Kindle Scribe with more pen options, file-handling updates and improved navigation.

Amazon launched the Kindle Scribe in the fall starting at 370 euros: it was its first Kindle with a 10.2-inch screen designed for taking notes and making sketches. It also launched its premium stylus, at 55 euros, and another standard stylus at 33 euros.

The stylus now has three new brush styles: pen for calligraphy, marker for highlighting text, and pencil for sketching. Additionally, each brush type has five thickness options. Existing options included stylus, highlighter, and eraser.

According to Amazon, all writing tools benefit from improved pressure and tilt capabilities for better precision when writing.

On the premium pen, the new brush options are available in the customizable shortcuts button and have a dedicated eraser.

The update also allows the creation of subfolders to organize the contents of notebooks. By pressing the button + in a folder, a new sub-folder is created. To move a folder, the user can tap the three-dot menu and select Move.

The three dots icon is also used to navigate inside notebooks. After pressing the icon, the user can select Go to page and type the number of the page to which he wishes to go. This function is very practical for large notebooks.

One of the limitations of the Kindle Scribe, noted during testing at ZDNet, was that it was possible to quickly send handwritten notes in PDF format in an email, but it was not possible to send them as a text file, OneNote or Word document.

Amazon is working to fix this issue in an upcoming update so users can send documents to Kindle Scribe from Microsoft Word, even if a Microsoft 365 subscription is required. Amazon is also working on a new lasso copy-and-paste tool, as well as other updates to notebook organization and navigation.
