Amazon made the news official the same day. The e-commerce giant now owns the rights to one of Hollywood’s most prestigious catalogs.
On May 26, 2021, Amazon announced that it wanted to acquire MGM for an amount of 8.45 billion dollars and today the e-commerce group indicates that it has finalized the transaction.
A catalog and licenses ready to power Amazon Prime Video
This operation obviously had to pass the analyzes of the various competition regulatory authorities. The American FTC as well as the European Commission found nothing wrong with the consequences of this agreement for the entertainment industry.
With the purchase of MGM, Amazon gets its hands on one of Hollywood’s most important catalogs. She first acquires the rights to the saga james bondeven if the latter are shared with EON Productions, the company of the Broccoli family which has managed the production of the films of the famous British secret agent since the 60s.
Amazon now has brands identified as The Adams Family, The pink Panther, rocky, RoboCop or tomb Raiderwhich could very easily be adapted into a series or a film to supply content to the Amazon Prime Video streaming service.
The platform will also be able to accommodate in the medium term the 4,000 films and 17,000 episodes produced by MGM for almost a century.
