Amber Heard opens up about relationship with and trial of Johnny Depp. She “made mistakes” but always told the truth.

Many people sided with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star after the verdict in Johnny Depp’s (59) defamation trial against Amber Heard (36). The actress now speaks extensively about the process on US television. “Until the day I die, I will stand by every word of my statement,” explains Heard in conversation with Savannah Guthrie (50) on “Today”.

Heard explains that a lot of “really important evidence” on her side was allegedly not discussed at trial. Depp’s attorneys “certainly did a better job of distracting the jury from the real issues” than hers, according to Heard. She “paid the price” for telling the truth about a more powerful person.

Right after the verdict Heard had already written on Instagramthat they believe Depp’s attorneys got it right, that the jury overlooked the “key issue of free speech” and ignored evidence. “I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence was still insufficient to establish the disproportionate power and influence […] to oppose my ex-husband”, she had also explained, among other things.

“I’ve done hideous, regrettable things”

The process dealt a lot with domestic violence, which both sides have accused each other umpteen times. She never instigated physical arguments between the two, “I reacted to that,” says Heard now. Depp said he never hit her. Guthrie asks, “Is that a lie?” The answer of the 36-year-old: “Yes, that’s it.”

Heard admits she did and said “disgusting, regrettable things” during her relationship with Depp. She sometimes behaved “terribly” and almost didn’t recognize herself. The actress has a lot of regrets, and says she contributed half to the toxic relationship between the two. “It was ugly, but it could also be beautiful,” she explains of the time together. “It was very, very toxic. We were horrible to each other.” Heard executes: “You know, I’ve made many, many mistakes. […] But I’ve always told the truth.”

The interview with Heard will be shown in two parts. After the first half of today, June 14th, the second half will be shown on Wednesday. On Friday, the entire conversation will be broadcast again in a special on “Dateline”.

Johnny Depp’s Amber Heard Defamation Trial

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard married in 2015, separated in 2016 and finally divorced in 2017. A jury had largely found the actor right in a defamation lawsuit against Heard in the United States on June 1. He sued her for an article in the Washington Post in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. She did not mention him by name, but the jury found her guilty of defamation.

Heard was supposed to wire Depp $15 million, but due to laws in Virginia, where the trial took place, she only has to come up with $10.35 million. She had filed a $100 million counterclaim and Depp was fined $2 million. The lawyer Heards later also stated on “Today” that her client wanted to appeal and “definitely could not” pay the amount.
