Ambitious project – madness: Electric trucks charge here with 3 megawatts!

In the forwarding business, time is money. Electric trucks can therefore not afford long charging times. Researchers are looking for solutions – and find them.

When charging, electric trucks need a lot of energy in a short time. A research project now wants to enable charging capacities of up to 3 megawatts. Long-distance trucks should not only be able to charge their batteries overnight, but also during shorter stops, such as at the loading ramp. Around 15 minutes should be enough. The Technical University of Munich and the commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN are among those involved in the project called NEFTON it’s more like just under 300 kilowatts. The truck industry has been working on megawatt charging for a long time, and the NEFTON project has now tripled this value again. The challenges include the high currents of up to 3000 A. These can no longer be transported via cables, instead, for example power rails required. The heat generated in the battery is also a problem.
