If an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is approaching, drivers are generally allowed to drive through the traffic light even when it is red in order to make room. The road traffic regulations state that in such a case, drivers are obliged to “clear the way”. However, the premise for this is that your behavior can prevent dangers to human life and public safety and order or serious damage to health.
If you have to drive through a red traffic light, always pay attention to oncoming traffic and anticipate the misconduct of other road users.
Important: If you drive red because of an approaching ambulance, fire department or police, be sure to write down the license plate number of the emergency vehicle. In case of doubt, you can prove that an operation took place.
