All the graphics cards will be able to benefit from AMD’s frame generation while keeping their own scaling solution (DLSS, FSR, XeSS).

Still with the idea of ​​competing with NVIDIA and its DLSS, version 3 of which was a great success, AMD worked on FSR3 which unfortunately did not experience the same success.

To restart the machine and silence the critics, the promoter of Radeon graphics cards is counting on an update logically called FSR 3.1 which must address the main defects.

Flickering, shimmering and ghosting

In September 2022, alongside the launch of the GeForce RTX 50 series, NVIDIA promoted a technology that has since attracted a lot of attention, DLSS 3.


The question of frame generation certainly does not only have supporters, but we cannot deny its impact on the games industry and on the work of the studios. Logically, AMD followed in the footsteps of its eternal competitor and went with its own frame generation technology with the FSR 3. Problem, in addition to difficulties in convincing developers, AMD encountered two faults.

The FSR 3 faces a problem with “temporal stability”, whether the scene is frozen or moving: this causes flickering, which is unpleasant to say the least, and a “shimmering” effect around objects. moving. In addition, a ghosting effect is present in animated scenes.

Adoption gap with studios

Let’s recognize one thing, AMD has not turned a deaf ear to these criticisms and in a publication made on its official blog, the brand even took the time to explain the consequences… while discussing the implementation of the FSR 3.1 which must correct these defects.

Please note that this is only an announcement at the moment: there are not yet any games that officially support FSR 3.1 even if Ratchet & Clank – A Rift Apart serves to illustrate the point. So, first of all, it is a question of working on the stability of the image so as not to lose detail and so that the result is more pleasant: the tingling on the moving characters was particularly unpleasant. Ghosting should therefore also be a thing of the past and that is so much the better.

Furthermore, AMD insists on the possibility of decoupling FSR 3.1 and frame generation. The idea here is to authorize the application of AMD’s frame generation to other upscaling techniques such as DLSS/DLSS2 or XeSS. To see if this actually interests developers and, of course, how this translates to the image.

Finally, AMD reminds that 40 games “ are or will be » stamped FSR 3. Unfortunately, not sure that the argument is likely to reassure the masses: at the same time, NVIDIA is increasing the announcements with its DLSS « now available in over 400 games and apps “. Not all of them are DLSS 3/3.5, but the gap is not closing between the two competitors.
