The new ones processors Ryzen 8040 promise to improve the performance of Ryzen 7040 without revolutionizing the design.

We were waiting for them, they have been announced. “They” are the new AMD processors planned to upgrade the 7040 range called Phoenix by the brand. Phoenix therefore gives way to Hawk Point.

It was during the “Advance AI” event that the American firm made this announcement which concerns the upcoming availability of no less than nine SKUs as they say in the jargon, nine references in short.

Zen 4 and RDNA 3 remain relevant

In detail, AMD plans five 8040HS processor models and four 8040U models. Models which, each time, are based on the same base as the Phoenix 7040 processors.

Indeed, there was no question of refreshing the Zen 4 CPU cores for this new range of chips, nor was there any plan to dust off the GPU cores which remain in RDNA 3. On the other hand, “AI” Obviously, AMD announces an update to the Ryzen AI core which is presented in a much more poetic way as an NPU or Neural Processing Unit.

In detail, note that the processors in the new 8040 range will range from 4 cores/8 threads without NPU for the Ryzen 3 8440U up to 8 cores/16 threads with NPU in the case of the Ryzen 9 8945HS.

Up to 1.4x more powerful than Ryzen 7040

The latter will logically be the strongest in the new range and it displays an operating frequency of 5.2 GHz at best boost for a TDP of between 35 and 54 watts.

It is also interesting to underline the division into three of the range with the TDP as a reference value. The Ryzen 8x45HS will therefore have a TDP of between 35 and 54 watts, while the Ryzen 8x40HS will be between 20 and 30 watts. Finally, the Ryzen 8x40U will have to make do with 15 to 30 watts.

AMD has not yet been very talkative and the information revealed by our colleagues has even been removed from the site which published it. However, a slide still confirmed the improvement in performance with a factor of 1.4 in favor of the Ryzen 8040 compared to the Ryzen 7040 on work related to artificial intelligence.

For now, everything suggests that the Ryzen 8040 will be officially launched by AMD during the first quarter of next year… at prices that are still completely mysterious.
