AMD and the opposite of Intel/NVIDIA
Reminder of the facts before getting to the heart of the matter. Oversampling aims to improve the visual rendering of video games by asking the graphics card to calculate a scene in Full HD (1080p), for example, but by displaying it in a higher definition, QHD (1440p).
To prevent the rendering from being filthy, effective upscaling techniques (over-sampling) are then used: the closest pixels are used to “imagine” those that need to be added to increase the image definition. However, in this little game, Intel and NVIDIA have decided to rely on ever more artificial intelligence.
The AI is responsible for working on the image, checking nearby pixels of course, but also relying on quantities of information such as movement vectors to provide a rendering that is as convincing as possible. AMD has always refused to do so, preferring a 100% software solution which therefore does not need dedicated cores.
FSR turning to artificial intelligence?
On paper, AMD’s solution suffers from lower image quality, but has the advantage of being more open, of working on more varied hardware: you can thus activate FSR on an AMD, Intel or NVIDIA.
However, things could change soon if we are to believe the response from Mark Papermaster, director of technology at AMD, to Sarah Guo’s question on the No Priors YouTube channel: “ What do you want them to know about AMD’s plans for 2024? »
“ 2024 is a colossal year for us. We have spent so many years improving our hardware and software capabilities for AI. We have just completed the integration of AI across our entire portfolio: Cloud, Edge, PC, Embedded Devices, Gaming Devices. We are enabling our gaming solutions to evolve towards AI upsampling and 2024 is a very important year of deployment. »
In other words, everything suggests that AMD will deploy a new AI-assisted oversampling technique or largely overhaul FSR as we know it today.
