AMD (discreetly) strengthens its range of processors for laptop PCs


Without making any publicity, AMD has just completed its catalog of low-consumption processors with the addition of two new Ryzen 5 references based on the “Zen 3+” architecture. These will be suitable for both Laptops and Mini-PCs.

Discreetly, and after launching its Ryzen 8000 series chips a few months ago, AMD is introducing two new Ryzen 7000 mobile processor references into its catalog: the Ryzen 5 7235H and Ryzen 5 7235HS.

Old generation from every point of view, these two low-consumption chips complete the late lineup “Rembrandt” from AMD by taking over the firm’s “Zen 3+” architecture, used since the start of 2022 (first on the Ryzen 6000, then on the Ryzen 7035).

This pair of new Ryzen 5 APUs is intended primarily for use on Laptops dedicated to gamers and creatives, but also on Mini-PCs. There we find, unsurprisingly given their nomenclature, a thermal envelope of 45 W by default.

Discreet launch of two “second knives”

In the detail of their technical specifications, these Ryzen 5 7235H and Ryzen 5 7235HS both have 8 cores and 16 threads clocked at a maximum of 4.2 GHz in boost (compared to 3.2 GHz in base frequency ). We also find the same amount of cache (8 MB in L3 and 2 MB in L2).

The main difference between the two chips comes from their market positioning. The first is more aimed at high-performance PCs (it also allows overclocking), while the second will be more readily installed on machines this time aiming for energy efficiency. Apart from their respective approaches, these Ryzen 5 APUs look exactly the same.

It remains to be seen why Lisa Su’s firm decided to launch additional “Zen 3+” chips late. Two complementary explanations can be put forward: the desire to offer more mid-range options to laptop and Mini-PC manufacturers, with high-performance APUs, but also a little more affordable since they are based on an old architecture; and the feeling that the “Zen 3+” architecture still offers interesting room for maneuver in 2024 for certain categories of devices.
