Big upheavals in perspective for the graphics cards AMD, with RDNA 4 in simple redesign and a renewal for RDNA 5.
As long as you have a minimum interest in new graphics technologies, you will be aware that the two giants of the sector are currently polishing their weapons for a new generation.
The latter will arrive at the end of the year, but this time, it will mark a fairly radical change of course between AMD and NVIDIA, with significantly different directions and objectives.
So no very high end on RDNA 4
On NVIDIA’s side, there are ultimately no huge surprises. The generation currently known under the code name Blackwell and already called GeForce RTX 50 should further drive the point home compared to the RTX 40.
We are talking about higher energy efficiency as well as significantly increased performance for the GeForce RTX 5090 like the RTX 5080, with the release of the latter reportedly planned before that of its big sister, as was the case a few years ago. generations earlier.
The rest of the Blackwell range would not be expected before the start of 2025, without any details of the calendar or model concerned having yet leaked.
For AMD, things are much more vague. In difficulty at the very high end for the current generation (the GeForce RTX 4090 has no equivalent in Radeon RX), AMD would have the idea of turning its back on the very high end for its future generation RDNA 4 .
RDNA 5: an entirely new architecture
Notably cited by two reference sites in graphic news, VideoCardz And Wccftech, the latest rumor confirms this decision by AMD. If the high-end RDNA 4 is clearly no longer on the agenda, we are even talking today of a kind of updating of RDNA 3 with this real/false new generation.
AMD had thus been widely criticized for the consumption of certain of these chips (Navi 32, Navi 33), which did not really progress compared to RDNA 2. In this context, a large part of the work of AMD engineers would have been d improve the energy efficiency of RDNA 3 to result in an RDNA 4 that is more convincing in this area, but also less innovative.
Some observers do not hesitate to say that “ since RDNA 3 did not live up to expectations […], RDNA 4 would mainly be a refurbishment of RDNA 3, a bugfix of this generation “. Another consequence, RDNA 5 would no longer be the direct sequel to RDNA 3/RDNA 4. AMD would have started from scratch for an entirely new architecture.
Patience however, because for RDNA 5, no timetable has been put forward, and since AMD is starting with something completely new, we could even imagine that it would change the architecture name. More than ever a case to follow as 2024 will be written with RDNA 4.
