According to various rumors, Sony is working with AMD on a new portable console. This would be powerful enough to be compatible with PlayStation 4 and 5 video games. Decryption.
At the end of last year, Sony launched its PlayStation Portal, a remote play peripheral designed for the PS5. It is therefore not a portable console strictly speaking, a segment that Sony abandoned a few years ago, after its PS Vita. However, according to some, it seems that the Japanese giant is ready to try the adventure again!
Towards a new portable console from Sony?
This is in fact what was mentioned through the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, rather well informed when it comes to being indiscreet towards NVIDIA and/or AMD. Thus, Sony is currently working with AMD on the development of a brand new portable video game console.
Technically, AMD would be working on the development of a chip with 18 computing units, which would allow the console to ensure perfect compatibility with PlayStation 4 games. PS5 games would also be affected, but the latter would require a patch upstream, developed by the developers.
A “PS Vita 2” compatible with PS4… and PS5?
It must be said that the insolent success of the Nintendo Switch since 2017, but also that of Valve’s Steam Deck, could push Sony to return to the portable console market. However, it remains to be seen in what form.
Indeed, it’s difficult to imagine a portable console with the same power as a PS5. By offering a lower-power portable console, Sony would then require developers to have to rework their games, in order to allow them to adapt to a less efficient architecture.
According to some, Sony could indeed try the nomadic adventure again, but by offering its own games, like the PSP and PS Vita in their time. The power of the machine could, however, allow it to also run possible ports from the PS4 (or even PS5) generation.
We will probably have to wait a few more months (years) before knowing what is being prepared at Sony. After the marketing of its PS5 Slim last year, the next hardware step for the Japanese giant should concern the launch of a PS5 Pro…
