First the high end, X670/X670E
Logically, who says new platform, also says new(x) chipset(s) and AMD lends itself more readily to the exercise that it takes advantage of the AM5 to put itself at the level of the competition on several points.
First, it changes socket and swaps PGA support for the LGA already used by Intel for a while. In the same way, again to return to the competitor of always, AMD has opted for the support of DDR5 and PCI Express 5.0.
Changes that require the release of a new chipset, the X670. Two versions will be offered. The most expensive – X670E – will support PCIe 5.0 for both storage and display while the X670 “just” is limited to storage.
Then the B650/B650E
The fact remains that alongside the X670/X670E, AMD of course has the idea of offering a slightly less high-end chipset, intended for the design of motherboards that are more accessible to ordinary mortals.
When the Ryzen 7000s were announced, Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, did not make a secret of the existence of the B650/B650E, but without precision. Today, we know that the launch of this second chipset is scheduled for October 4, ultimately very shortly after the X670/X670E.
We should also remember that the B650/B650E – E distinction for Extended – is the same as the X670: the simple model is limited to PCIe 5.0 for NVMe storage while the other also combines it with graphics card support.
