AMD says no to Nvidia connectivity to avoid overheating


While Nvidia is investigating to determine the causes of the overheating observed on the 16 pin connector of certain GeForce RTX 4090s, AMD will turn to another power outlet for its future RDNA 3 graphics cards.

It’s official, AMD and Nvidia will definitely go their separate ways when it comes to power connectors. This is what we learn from an official source through a tweet by Scott Herkelman, vice president of the Radeon division at AMD. Published this October 25 in response to Kyle Bennett, editor-in-chief of the specialized site HardOCP and former Intel, this tweet confirms information that is already more or less certain: AMD will not equip its next RDNA 3 graphics cards with 16-pin “12VHPWR” connectors, used by Nvidia.

Scott Herkelman’s confirmation comes as the 16-pin connector is currently going through a rough patch. On some GeForce RTX 4090s, major overheating problems have indeed led to pure and simple combustion of the connector, but also of the end of the power cable attached to it. An extreme situation for the moment reported by only a handful of users, but which has already caused a lot of noise in the specialized press.

AMD would remain on “old-fashioned” 8-pin connectors

As reminded WCCFTech, AMD will soon unveil its next Radeon. This new generation of cards will be based on TSMC’s RDNA 3 graphics architecture and 5nm etching to achieve a more than 50% increase in performance per watt compared to the current RDNA 2 architecture. AMD will also take advantage of its new generation of GPUs to improve performance by ray tracingrefine his Adaptive Power Management and introduce a new generation of sound Infinity Cacheamong others.

On the consumption side, the Radeon RDNA 3 will be more greedy than the current Radeon RDNA 2 but they should nevertheless be much more economical than the latest RTX 4000 from Nvidia.

Logically, this should allow AMD to settle for “traditional” 8-pin connectors. Several leaked PCBs have also supported this supposition, with some custom boards showing up to three adjoining 8-pin connectors.
