Because there is no reason for Intel alone to push its processors towards ever more gigahertz. As futile as that may be.
At the very moment of announcing the Ryzen 7000s, AMD had confirmed a clear trend towards increased frequency compared to the previous generation. The Ryzen 9 7950X even comes to tease 6 GHz.
5793.75 MHz to be exact
Relayed by TechPowerUp, the performance was spotted by TUM_APISAK who echoed it on Twitter. The Ryzen 9 7950X and its 16 cores have therefore been pushed to 5.8 GHz for a overclocking that smells like testosterone.
To reach such a frequency, it was necessary to increase the voltage of the chip to 1.4 Volt which should have pushed everything beyond the limit of 95°C, but the CPU-Z validation page mentions just 39.5°C, a sign that the beast was heavily chilled.
Unfortunately, no performance measurement is given and to get an idea of the potential of the beast, we will turn to AMD. Indeed, his Xoc team achieved a very acceptable 5.4 GHz across all cores using a “simple” 280 millimeter AiO.
Under such conditions – ASRock X670E Taichi motherboard and 32 GB of DDR5 Kingston – the Ryzen 9 7950X achieves a comfortable score of 40,498 points on Cinebench R23.
