Zen 5 architecture will revolutionize processors AMD… and bring a whole bunch of new references.
If Intel is often criticized for its sometimes incomprehensible names or for its recent decision to completely change the nomenclature for its processors, AMD is not always easy to follow either.
We now all know that 2024 will mark the launch of the new Zen 5 architecture, with the aim of releasing at least two ranges of processors, which should therefore bear the name Ryzen 9000.
Leaked drivers for AMD chipset
Until now, AMD had mainly given code names for its future generations of processors. This is how the Granite Ridge ranges on one side and Strix Point on the other were advanced.
Strix Point should be the first launched by AMD, and we are talking about the third quarter of 2024 for this marketing, even if nothing official has yet been communicated. Strix Point is intended as an APU aimed at the laptop or mini-PC market.
For its part, Granite Ridge will concern so-called desktop PCs, our office machines, and should be released a little later in the year. If both ranges are equipped with Zen 5 cores, Strix Point integrates GPU cores in RDNA 3.5, while Granite Ridge would make do with RDNA 2.
Towards a powerful Ryzen 9 9950X3D?
Through the publication of its chipset drivers, 6.03.19.217, AMD has just clarified an interesting point about these two processor ranges: their (supposed) commercial name.
While there are already Ryzen 8000s on the market, the American firm should therefore opt for Ryzen 9000 on its next chips. However, it should be noted that this name Ryzen 9000 has not yet been officially associated with processors equipped with Zen 5 cores.
That said, the coincidence would really be too big. AMD is starting to talk about Ryzen 9000 processors, even though the case for the Zen 5 architecture is on everyone’s lips. If the Ryzen 9000s are therefore well associated with Zen 5, we should have several variations.
On the one hand, we would have Ryzen 9050H and/or Ryzen 9050U for the Strix Point, Ryzen 9055HX for the Fire Range scheduled for early 2025, and Ryzen 9000 with names like the Ryzen 9 9950X for the Granite Ridge.
