Preliminary results below expectations: a processor which is perhaps not as strong as hoped by the fans?

The latest news – AMD itself says so – the Ryzen 9 7900X3D and Ryzen 9 7950X3D will land on February 28th. However, they are already in the hands of testers around the world, as evidenced by some leaks on certain bench databases.

A cut below the 7950X with Geekbench 5

Figurehead of AMD’s new 3D Vertical Cache range, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D has escaped certain non-disclosure agreements and has recently found itself on the bases of the Geekbench 5 tool.

A leak that allows you to have an overview of its performance, to compare it to that of its direct competitors and to verify the impact of the combined L2 + L3 cache which, let’s remember, goes from 80 MB (7950X) to 144 MB (7950X3D).

Unfortunately, this first result is not the most convincing for AMD and with 2,157 points on the single-core test, it is down compared to the 7950X (2,191 pts), but also to the 7900X (2,180 pts) and Intel’s 13900K (2,214 pts).

In multi-core, the 7950X3D fortunately manages to regain control over the 7900X (8 cores against 12 all the same), but with 21,841 points, it remains a good distance from the 7950X (23,081 pts) and the 13900K (25,234 points).

At the level of 13900K under Blender and SiSoft

Shortly after this Geekbench 5 “leak”, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D was also in the spotlight on the bases of Blender and SiSoftware tools, but the results are hardly more convincing.

With a little less direct comparison, we still see that the 7950X3D remains behind the 7950X on both tests, with a difference that is not negligible. On the other hand, it is more in the fight with the 13900K, slightly winning over Blender and bowing a short head over SiSoft.

While some users expected to find a processor ” to rule them all », these results are a bit disappointing. However, keep in mind that BIOS updates can improve things further and that we are only talking about “in production” results here.

Finally, remember that 3D Vertical Cache technology is designed to improve results in video games or with cache-intensive applications. Finally, several observers point the finger at the heating of the 7950X3D which could not hold its highest frequencies as long as the 7950X.
