The graphics cards armies of the high-end Navi 31 GPU will likely be released in the fall.

The first AMD graphics cards under RDNA 3 architecture should be released before the end of the year; Lisa Su reiterated that promise last February. If the company follows the same schedule as for the RX 6000 range, the high-end models based on the Navi 31 GPU will be the first on the market.

MCM design

The design of the GPU has been finalized for several months. Today’s leak reveals that AMD is also starting to prepare the ground for the software part: the patch below mentions the SoC 21, probable designation of the Navi 31 GPU.

The exact specifications of the RX 7000 graphics cards are still uncertain. A February post (following screenshot) by an AMD member nonetheless revealed that at least one or even two RDNA 3 GPUs would adopt a Multi-Chip-Module (MCM) design involving two TSMC etching processes (5nm and 6 nm). Other GPUs, notably the Navi 33 apparently intended to power the Radeon RX 7700 XT, would on the other hand retain a more classic monolithic design; they would be engraved in 6 nm.

Note that by adopting an MCM design for some of its consumer GPUs, AMD could be one step ahead of NVIDIA. Indeed, NVIDIA seems to reserve this design for its Hooper solutions for servers. The company would remain on a monolithic design for the Ada Lovelace GPUs of the GeForce RTX 4000.

A Radeon RX 7900 XT with 15,360 stream processors?

Coming back to our Radeon RX 7000s, some reviewers have pointed to a few specs more specific than those mentioned above; they remain of course mere rumours. In particular, there was talk of 15,360 stream processors. For comparison, the Radeon RX 6900 XT, AMD’s current flagship, has 5120.

AMD official roadmap

Regarding VRAM, AMD should always rely on GDDR6 from Samsung, while high-end solutions from NVIDIA benefit from GDDR6X developed by Micron.

AMD’s Navi 31 GPU has reached the ” tape-out end of 2021. In general, the time from this stage to mass production is around 8 months. This deadline sticks with a launch during the second half of the year. Remember that the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT landed in November 2020. Finally, also keep in mind that a Radeon RX 6000 “refresh” series is expected shortly.
