The Zen 4 architecture of processors AMD could be supplanted by Zen 5 in the first half of next year.
Very “in good shape”, AMD has been at the heart of the news in recent days, whether for the arrival of new technologies for RDNA 3 cards (HYPR-RX or FSR 3 fluid motion) or its CPU division.
Indeed, if Zen 4 is now well established, eyes are already looking towards the future and the two successive generations that are Zen 5 and Zen 6 with leaks to clarify all that a little.
Nirvana (Zen 5) in the first half of 2024
Leaks orchestrated by the inevitable Moore’s Law is Dead, of which we know, however, that the information is not systematically verified. So let’s keep in mind that nothing that follows is official.
The YouTuber discusses the roadmap of AMD’s CPU division by mentioning the next two architectures Nirvana (Zen 5) and Morpheus (Zen 6). The premiere is not expected until – at best – the first half of next year and should be at the heart of the Ryzen 8000 processors.
We are talking here about an architecture combining TSMC’s 3 and 4 nm processes with, as a result, an increase in the number of instructions per second (IPC) of around 10 to 15%. The slide presented by Moore’s Law is Dead also mentions the presence of a 48 KB data cache and 6 ALUs.
This acronym doesn’t mean anything to you? These are “arithmetic and logical” units, therefore responsible for everything that involves calculation. Finally, the document also mentions FP-512 variants and a “ new low consumption core option “. AMD would also have in mind a maximum of “ 16 complex cores “.
On this last point, things are still quite vague, but this probably concerns the design of processors with different types of cores as Intel does on high-performance/efficient cores.
Morpheus (Zen 6) at the end of 2025
Obviously still a little further from us, the second AMD architecture mentioned by Moore’s Law is Dead is none other than Morpheus, the Matrixian code name of the one we also know as Zen 6.
There, we should not count on a release/marketing before – always in the best case scenario – the second half of the year 2025. Suffice to say that the information collected by the YouTuber is even more vague, when it is not more uncertain.
Let us nevertheless remember the continued evolution of the manufacturing process which should then rely on TSMC’s N2 and N3 technologies for engraving in 2 nm and 3 nm. AMD is targeting a 10% increase in the number of instructions per cycle… compared to Nirvana.
AMD would have the idea of adding FP16 instructions to accelerate the so-called “ AI/ML », for artificial intelligence and machine learning. There is also talk of going from 16 to 32 “ complex hearts », a doubling since Nirvana.
Moore’s Law is Dead finally specifies that Morpheus should be the occasion for more profound changes in the design of processors with more complexity: we are talking here about stacking the CCDs on the IOD core intended to manage the inputs/outputs. A way to evolve AMD’s chiplet design.
