American McGee’s Alice: a new series project adapting the horrific video game launched, a renowned screenwriter at the helm

Even if none of its titles has been a huge success, American McGee is one of its creators whose paw marked the video game industry. His American McGee’s Alice offering a horrifying re-reading ofAlice in Wonderland caused a sensation in 2000, as did its sequel Alice: Madness Returns published in 2011. He never hid his ambitions to produce a third part, which could have been called Alice: Otherlands Where Alice: Asylum, but the editor Electronic Arts never gave the green light.

The creator is nevertheless the holder of the film adaptation rights of the license since 2013, after having bought them from Size Films through a Kickstarter. The studio originally wanted to offer a feature film directed by Wes Craven from the past decade, but it never came to fruition, in the same way as the projects that American McGee has wanted to launch in this field in recent years.

Things will probably finally come to fruition soon, thanks to the support of the studio Radar Pictures (Jumanji, Riddick) and D’Abandon Entertainment, which will produce a series Alice. Screenwriter David Hayter, already behind the adaptations of X-Men and Watchmen: The Guardians, will take care of transcribing this story where Alice returns to the other side of the mirror following a stay in an asylum after the brutal death of his parents, to discover an imaginary world far from being wonderful.

“American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Madness game series is a groundbreaking reimagining of the classic tale. It takes you deep into a corrupted wonderland and shines light on dark corners the world has never seen. I am beyond excited to bring this world of craziness and wonder to a global audience,” Hayter said in a statement.

“David Hayter brings imagination, experience and skill honed from successful assignments in film, television and video games – a unique combination that will make this Wonderland adventure a success for the franchise and the fans. I am thrilled to work with him and know Alice fans will greet him with mad affection,” said American McGee.

The series is developed with the perspective of broadcast it on a television channel, but given the current state of the market, a release on video-on-demand services cannot be ruled out. Finally, that will be if the project is well produced and shot as desired, which is never so automatic as that on the cinema market, and even less in view of previous failures for this license.
