Even before The Weeknd: With Olivia Rodrigo, a newcomer is entering the race at this year’s American Music Awards as a big favorite.

The nominations for the American Music Awards (AMAs) have been released. Superstar The Weeknd (31) may enter the race with six chances of receiving an award. However, the singer is outdone by newcomer Olivia Rodrigo. The only 18-year-old Californian has seven nominations for her first AMA participation like no other artist. Bad Bunny (27), Doja Cat (26) and Giveon (26) each have five.

Rodrigo has been nominated for her debut album “Sour”, which was released in 2021, as “Best Newcomer”, “Best Artist” and in the category “Artist of the Year”. There, however, the competition is extremely high: In addition to The Weeknd, the band BTS, Drake (35), Taylor Swift (31) and Ariana Grande (28) are in the award.

The fans decide

The 2021 American Music Awards will be presented on November 21 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast by ABC. The award ceremony was founded in 1973 to compete with the Grammys. There is one important difference: while at the Grammys the winners are chosen by decision-makers from the entertainment industry, at the AMAs it is the fans who vote.
