Amherd on Olympic plans – “I’m not unhappy that we’re given more time” – News

The dream of hosting the Winter Olympics in Switzerland has been dashed for the time being. While the IOC drops the Swiss application for 2030, it opens the door to hosting the event in 2038. Federal Councilor and Sports Minister Viola Amherd comments on the new Olympic plans.

Viola Amherd has been a Federal Councilor and Head of the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) since 2019. She was born in 1962 and was a self-employed lawyer and notary as well as mayor of Brig-Glis before her election to the Federal Council. She also sat on the National Council for the CVP Upper Valais for over ten years and worked as a part-time judge in the Federal Personnel Appeals Commission from 1994 to 2006.

SRF News: The 2030 Olympics are off the table. How big is the disappointment?

Viola Amherd: I am pleased that the IOC has decided to include the Swiss candidacy in a privileged dialogue for the event in 2038. That’s a little later than you thought. However, the whole thing can also lead to the dossier being deepened and Switzerland being able to come up with a well-founded project.

Is the privileged dialogue in 2038 a consolation?

No, we have pole position for 2038. And when you see how big such an Olympic candidacy and the event is, I’m not unhappy that we’re given a little more time.

What does privileged dialogue mean specifically?

Switzerland is chosen as a candidate and this gives us a certain degree of security in the work. This is also positive for the IOC, as we have direct democratic rights in our country and we now have enough time until 2038 to prepare the whole thing.

Mirjam Spreiter conducted the interview.
