After the terrorist attack in Moscow, CDU politician Amthor warns of attacks in Germany in an early start on ntv. The government is only inadequately prepared for this, also because there is no law on data retention.

The CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor sees a high terrorist threat for Germany and accuses the federal government of poor preparation in the fight against terrorism. “The threat of terrorism in Germany, in Europe, in the entire Western world is greater than it has been for a long time,” he said on ntv Frühstart. The Islamic State and its offshoots are not dead, but the terrorist threat lives in the free world. “We have to be very worried about this,” the Bundestag member added, warning that the upcoming European Football Championship was an obvious target for terrorist attacks. Therefore, the security concept for the EM must now be examined very carefully again.

However, the federal government is generally not doing enough to support the security authorities in the fight against terrorism. “We have a high terrorist threat, but a poorly prepared federal government,” criticized the CDU politician. “Our security services are poorly equipped by the government. They lack the necessary powers.”

The fact that the authorities in Germany do not have the necessary powers is also made clear by the fact that in recent years more than half of the terrorist attacks foiled in Germany could only be prevented through tips from foreign intelligence services. In this context, Amthor is calling for a law on data retention. “We need that in order to take effective action against terrorists,” emphasized the domestic politician and continued his traffic light criticism on this point: “If we put such strong shackles on our own security authorities, out of left-wing ideological security policy, as Nancy Faeser does, Then it’s a dangerous thing.”

Traffic light “no longer capable of governing”

For Amthor, the traffic light is no longer capable of governing anyway. The CDU politician supports the new election proposal of his party leader Friedrich Merz and sharply criticized the federal government: “Every additional day of traffic lights fuels disillusionment with politics.” The Union has been calling on the traffic light to make a U-turn for months, but the government seems to lack the strength to do so. “You get the impression that they can’t keep themselves together anymore. They muddle through.” The Federal Chancellor in particular no longer has the necessary trust.

“I see that this government is hopelessly divided, not just on one issue, but on a whole bundle of issues,” said the CDU member of the Bundestag. “They can’t carry on like this, there needs to be a policy change in Germany, and it’s better to do it sooner than later.” And the Union would of course be ready to bring about such a policy change in Germany.

In the last federal election, Amthor said they suffered a “self-inflicted defeat” and continues self-critically: “We were no longer good enough.” After this defeat, the CDU invested a lot of time and energy in order to find itself more strongly. With the new basic program, the CDU has a good agenda to go into the election campaign, said Amthor.
