A real drama unfolded at the Stéphane-Hessel high school in Toulouse. On January 10, 2024, a final year student from this Toulouse establishment stabbed himself in the abdomen during class in front of his teacher and his classmates. According to La Dépêche du Midi, emergency services were quickly called to the scene and took care of the teenager before transferring him to the nearest hospital. Claiming to be a victim of school harassment, he filed two complaints and the investigations were closed without further action by the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office. Out of trouble, he confided in the columns of La Dépêche du Midi Sunday January 14, 2024. Jean, whose first name has been changed, explains that he “wanted to die to punish those who [lui] do harm”. “I wanted my situation to serve as an example. No one should live an ordeal like mine“, added the 18-year-old young man. Even if the investigation did not show any school harassment, he claims to have been targeted by several other students during a romantic relationship. That’s when he filed his first complaint. Before the investigation was closed without further action.

I panicked and stuck a knife in my stomach in front of everyone. Fortunately, the teacher saved my lifehe reveals, explaining that he has a seven-centimeter wound. This unfortunate gesture allowed me to free myself.” Jean, who did not want “not to be afraid” to other students, wants “to resume [s]has life in hand”. Feeling mistreated by his classmates, he had already decided to give a speech to the other students during a lesson. “I explained my situation by asking my classmates not to listen to everything that was said about me. I did not give the names of the harassers but I wanted to raise awareness.”, he recalls to our colleagues. And to accuse his establishment for not having listened to his message : “I was asked not to disrupt the class anymore even though I had the approval of my teacher. I felt very isolated”. An investigation has since been opened and entrusted to the personal injury brigade. Four people, targeted by the young man’s previous complaints, have already been heard. The rectorate announced the opening of an investigation “in order to shed light on this matter”.
