It’s the new mini-series that’s a hit on Netflix, An Almost Normal Family has quickly climbed into the platform’s top viewing charts since it was put online. Thanks to its poignant story, its breathtaking pace and its many twists and turns, this Swedish fiction has won over subscribers.

It must be said that An Almost Normal Family tells the story of a particularly gripping investigation: the one launched into Stella Sandell (Alexandra Karlsson Tyrefors), a 19-year-old young woman accused of the murder of her boyfriend Chris (Christian Fandango Sundgren).

Throughout the episodes, we understand thanks to flashbacks and the different points of view of those around her, notably her parents, Adam (Björn Bengtsson) and Ulrika (Lo Kauppi), respectively a priest and a lawyer, the traumatic events she went through and what happened to get her there.

This affair caused so much noise that it became the main topic of conversation in the residential suburb of Lund in Sweden, where Stella’s family was nevertheless very appreciated and respected. It is one of those seemingly “ordinary” households and yet it is, as its title indicates, “almost normal” since the spectators will discover their darkest secrets.

At first glance, An Almost Normal Family has everything to be adapted from a news item. So is this new miniseries based on a true story?


The answer is no ! An Almost Normal Family is not an adaptation of a real event but the transposition of a bestseller of the same name. Written by Mattias Edvardsson, a former psychology professor, this novel enjoyed great international success in 2018, being translated into more than 30 languages.

If the story ofAn almost normal family is not based on a real event, the author Mattias Edvardsson planted his plot in the city of Lund, which is his hometown.

Sold 550,000 copies, An almost normal family is written in three parts with its own first-person narrator: the father, the daughter and the mother. All the strength of the story lies in this multiplicity of points of view which tells the same story with distinct voices, making it progress gradually.

Each point of view allows us to tell difficult events and subjects that may offend certain sensitivities, which is why the Netflix series is not recommended for those under 16.
