DJI has unveiled its new FPV drone, the DJI Avata, lighter than the first model and accompanied by a new helmet and a new controller.
DJI is a particularly well-positioned player in the field of first-person drones. It must be said that the Chinese manufacturer offers not only drones, but also action cameras. It was therefore logical that the firm in turn launches into the market of drones intended for FPV shooting. After the DJI FPV, launched at the start of the year, the manufacturer presented a second model of its kind, much lighter, the DJI Avata drone.
Unlike most FPV drones, which are generally assembled directly by the pilots, the DJI Avata is an all-in-one solution directly integrating the drone itself, but also the camera and the control solution with the helmet and the controller. .
On the side of the on-board camera, we will find a stabilized sensor of 48 megapixels in standard format 1/1.7. Enough to allow shooting in 4K at 60p or in 2.7K up to 120p. The integrated lens offers a field of view of 155° with a focal aperture of f/2.8.
A much lighter drone than the DJI FPV
The drone also benefits from an autonomy of up to 18 minutes. FPV drone requires, the DJI Avata is relatively light with a weight of 410 grams. For comparison, note that the DJI Mini 3 Pro displays 249 grams on the scale. However, DJI’s first FPV drone had a weight of 795 grams.
We will also find several functions related to shooting like RockSteady to reinforce stabilization and HorizonSteady for a good upgrade. The DJI Avata is also equipped with 20 GB of storage space in addition to microSD card support.
If the drone is mainly intended to be piloted using glasses, it nevertheless benefits from several automatic piloting features and, above all, safety. In addition to the aerodynamic propeller protections, we will find emergency braking and hovering modes as well as a function to automatically return the drone to its take-off point.
The DJI Avata also has an infrared detection system and two optical cameras under the chassis to help it hover in hover mode. Finally, we will find three piloting modes: normal mode (N) — for assisted piloting -, manual mode (M) — for complete piloting — and sport mode (S) — for complete piloting with a few functions of security.
A new headset and a new controller
If the DJI Avata can be used with the V2 DJI FPV helmet, the Chinese manufacturer is accompanying its launch with its new generation of FPV helmet, the DJI Goggles 2. This is a helmet equipped with a micro-Oled screen ensuring transmission with the drone via the DJI O3+ protocol. Thus, the return of the drone to the helmet can be done with a low latency of 30 ms with a range of 10 km and a display in 1080p at 100 frames per second. The firm also takes the opportunity to launch a new motion controller to control the drone.

The new DJI Avata drone is available for pre-order this Thursday at a price of 579 euros alone. A DJI Avata Prov-View pack is also offered, priced at 1429 euros with the drone, the DJI Goggles 2 headset and the motion controller. Finally, the DJI Avata Fly Smart Kit integrates the drone, the controller and the old V2 DJI FPV headset.
