an exemption put in place for disabled students

Between new health measures and the wearing of a compulsory mask from 6 years old, including a tribute to Samuel Paty, this return to school is not likely to be easy. We report some additional information regarding disabled children, who may benefit from a mask-wearing exemption.

After ensuring that schools (except universities) would remain open for this second confinement, the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer announced a brand new reinforced health protocol. Wearing a mask now compulsory from the age of 6 is one of them. Measures deemed necessary to counter the second wave of the pandemic.

An exemption for disabled children

However, what about children with disabilities? Some of them cannot wear them due to their medical condition. Sophie Cluzel, Secretary of State for People with Disabilities, sheds light on these questions.

From the start of the school year on November 2, these students can benefit from an exemption from wearing a mask on presentation of a medical certificate. The following will be able to benefit from the exemption: autistic children, those with developmental disabilities, and classes with deaf and hard of hearing children.

Sophie Cluzel also specifies that flexibility will be granted until November 9 to present the required certificate.

News that can reassure parents.

What measures for the deaf and hard of hearing?

Inclusive transparent masks so that the deaf and hard of hearing can read lips and understand their school environment. It is true that the students, and everyone else, with these disabilities have been slightly put aside, and not immediately taken into account in the measures enacted for months now.

These inclusive masks were distributed by the National Education to teachers supervising these students. Unfortunately, the production of these masks is largely limited, and therefore could deprive the deaf and hard of hearing and their teachers of correct communication. Indeed, the production of these masks is estimated at 80,000 per month.

We sincerely hope that this return will go well for all students with disabilities.
