Thought the Nokia Lumia 920 was a thing of the past? Think again! HMD Global is preparing its comeback under the name Skyline. A smartphone that promises to marry the iconic design of 2012 with the performance of 2024 of a mid-range smartphone.
Prepare for a trip back in time! As usual, HMD Global is preparing to resurrect the legendary Nokia Lumia 920, but with a big surprise: it will run Android.
Lumia 920 to be reborn under Android
The HMD Skyline, that’s its name, takes up the plastic monobloc design that made the Lumia 920 a success in 2012. But make no mistake: under this retro look hides a resolutely modern smartphone. Exit Windows Phone, make way for Android! A logical choice that will allow the Skyline to take advantage of the immense ecosystem of applications of the Google system.
On the screen side, HMD does not do things by halves with a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel, Full HD+ and capable of reaching 120 Hz. Enough to do justice to the vivid colors that made the Lumia famous.
Under the hood, the Skyline has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor, supported by 8 or 12 GB of RAM depending on the version. A configuration that promises very decent performance for daily use, even if we remain below high-end smartphones.
The 256GB of storage should satisfy most users, although the lack of a microSD slot (unconfirmed at this time) might frustrate some.
HMD seems to have gone a little further than usual on the photo side, with an optically stabilized 108 Mpx main sensor. A considerable leap forward compared to the original Lumia 920, which was renowned for its photo performance at the time. The 8 Mpx ultra wide-angle and the 2 Mpx macro sensor complete the arsenal on the back, while a 32 Mpx sensor will take care of selfies.
It remains to be seen how the software processing will be optimized. The Lumias were renowned for the quality of their photos, HMD will have a lot to do to live up to this legacy.
Here, it’s interesting, HMD seems to have taken the license of Lumia, but not of the Nokia brand. Moreover, HMD launched with its own brand in 2024. The first smartphones are the HMD Pulse.
