an ultra-awaited feature, it will change everything

Sony announced a few weeks ago the arrival of a feature particularly expected by some PS5 players. It is now available for some lucky ones.

Cloud gaming, which still seemed like an old fantasy a decade ago, is becoming more and more part of our daily lives. Thanks to this technology, Nintendo Switch owners can enjoy extremely demanding titles that could not be run while installed on the console. Xbox also offers a cloud gaming solution to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. This allows them not only to play titles without installing them, but also to launch them on PC, smartphone or tablet simply with a compatible controller and an Internet connection. Obviously, Sony does not intend to be left behind and is also banking on this popular technology. The Japanese firm has just rolled out a new feature on PS5 eagerly awaited by some.

An expected PS5 feature available to some

For several hours, some PS Plus Premium subscribers registered in the Beta program have been receiving an exceptional invitation from Sony in their mailboxes. It allows them to test a new feature: PS5 game streaming in 4K. Indeed, since cloud gaming is available on the console, players could only play titles from the PS4 catalog without prior installation. PS Plus Premium members with beta access had already had the privilege of testing PS5 games in the cloud since June, but not in 4K. As a user on ResetEra shows, it is now possible to choose between 720p, 1080, 1440p, 2160p resolutions. At the moment, only the following titles are playable in 4K via cloud gaming:

  • God of War: Ragnarok
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Fortnite
  • Fall Guys
  • Destiny 2
  • Returnal
  • death stranding
  • Demons Souls
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure
  • All-Star Destruction

Trial versions of Resident Evil Village and Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chronicles are also available. Note that the saves you have if you have already launched these PS5 games are automatically recovered.

An option that requires a good connection

Sony announced a few months ago that the feature was being tested internally. The test phase now extends to players registered in the beta program. It’s hard to say when it might roll out to the general public, but chances are it’ll be included when the next big update is officially available to everyone.

In any case, this option should please many players. Imagine, you launch your PS5, a game catches your eye and rather than waiting for it to install (which can take time if it weighs more than 100 GB), you can play it thanks to the cloud gaming without sacrificing image quality. Now, we have to wait to see if the 4K resolution will also be available in Remote Play, the feature that allows you to stream your PS4 and PS5 games remotely on smartphones, tablets and PCs. It should be noted, however, that to enjoy “cloud gaming” at best, it is preferable to have an excellent Internet connection, especially to play in 4K.
