An umpteenth evolution of Wi-Fi is coming, with finer management of energy consumption

There was a time when the Wi-Fi Alliance, whose mission is to develop the standards of this wireless communication technology, saw fit to simplify its nomenclature. Codes that were obscure and devoid of obvious logic (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, etc.) were replaced by numbers: Wi-Fi 1, Wi-Fi 2, Wi-Fi 3 and so on. following.

Since then, things have gotten a little more complicated: there has certainly been the announcement of a Wi-Fi 7, which must always increase speeds and significantly reduce latency. But in the meantime a Wi-Fi 6E has been added, with similar promises, to describe the arrival of Wi-Fi on new frequencies (the 6 gigahertz band) never used before.

Wi-Fi 6 Release 2

And now, there is evolution in the evolution with Wi-Fi 6 (which is not the 6E, we must follow). This internal change, described by the Wi-Fi Alliance in an announcement published on January 5, 2022, will above all improve the uplink to handle the growing number of connected devices. It will also have more detailed management of energy consumption.

This transformation has a name, officially Wi-Fi Certified 6 Release 2, or more simply Wi-Fi 6 Release 2. This is clearly the evolution of the certification which was finalized in 2021, with new features for the public, but also the businesses, industries and organizations that operate this wireless link.

A question which will arise will be to verify the compatibility of the material already supporting Wi-Fi 6 with this Wi-Fi 6 Release 2. It is a question which arises anyway, whatever the new standards which arrive. Still, manufacturers will not fail to communicate on the subject, indicating whether the current material is eligible or whether it will be necessary to turn to new products.
