Ancestral: this Korean Netflix series is adapted from a webtoon


Korean drama Ancestralall six episodes of which are on Netflix, takes place in a cemetery in which mournful events follow one another.

Ancestral quickly landed in the Netflix Top 10. After being posted online on January 19, 2024, it was No. 5 in the ranking five days later. If you like dark and gloomy thrillers, where the line between reality and paranormal seems very thin, there is no doubt thatAncestral might please you.

A legacy that falls a bit from the sky, for Yoon Seo-ha. She never knew her uncle, but, upon his death, she was transferred ownership of his land, on which there was notably a large cemetery. Once she arrives there to discover the place, Yoon discovers mysterious events and then atrocious crimes. She also meets, there, Kim Young-ho, a strange man who claims to be her half-brother… but who does not seem innocent in all these dark secrets either.

This occult thriller is actually an adaptation of a webtoon — a comic book format originating from South Korea, based on regular online publication. THE webtoon of the same name, The Bequeathed, was a great success in Korea. Untranslated into other languages, it was signed Kang Tae-kyung. This is the second time that this author has seen one of her webtoons adapted: Sacred, Divorced gave rise to the k-drama The sacred bonds of divorce (Divorce Attorney Shin), in 12 episodes on Netflix.

A season 2 for Ancestral?

Ancestral forms a complete story in six chapters. The story is therefore wrapped up at the end, which does not lead to potential new episodes. On the other hand, if you are looking for another recent Korean drama between thriller and horror genre, it is always possible to continue with The Creature of Kyongsongthe last part of which was also put online in January 2024.
