Ancient milestones – hiking in the footsteps of the ancient Romans

Up until a year ago, 14 Roman milestones still stood on the B 99 Katschberg Straße in Lungau. Cleaned and conserved, they are now being stored in the Mauterndorf road maintenance department until they are reinstalled and presented in Untertauern, Tweng and other communities along the important Roman imperial road. The historic Roman road, which runs almost parallel to the B 99 federal road, was recorded in a geographic information system by the State Archaeologists in cooperation with the Federal Monuments Office and documented with photographs. Areas that are still in their original form can be found, for example, in Untertauern, at the Gnadenfall or at the Johannesfall. An impressive section exists at the Wachtbrücke in Tweng, where a steep incline with serpentines was mastered.
