Lhe mountain resorts now seem obvious. Most were initially hydrotherapy and climatism centers (Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Aix-les-Bains, Cauterets, Bagnères-de-Bigorre) with access by rail. They have become regular winter vacation destinations. Until two centuries ago, winter was the off-season, the one that the peasants, forced to live for long months with their animals in unsanitary dwellings, saw arriving with despair. No one imagined that one day this period of torpor would turn into wealth, that it would put a stop to the rural exodus, revive the local economy and improve the living conditions of mountain populations.
