Andor episode 6 finally shows us a believable lesbian couple

The new series Star Wars, which follows the adventures of Cassian Andor in the rebellion, does not only show the character. He joins a group of rebels, including a queer couple. This is the first time that we can actually see a same-sex couple in the universe. Star Wars.

We suspected it since episode 5 ofAndor. The new Star Wars series, currently being broadcast on Disney +, had already made us realize at that time that something was going on between two characters from Cassian Andor’s team.

If there have still been no romantic declarations, signs announcing the sexuality of the characters in large, or even the slightest kiss, episode 6 confirms all the same what spectators had already understood: there has a queer couple in Andor. And that’s big news in the universe Star Wars. Be careful, if you continue the article and you haven’t seen episode 6 yet, a good dose of spoilers waiting for you.

Is that too subtle?

So yes: Vel and Cinta are together. If the two women of the rebel group appear on several occasions very close, it is above all the comments of the other members of the team that make it possible to draw this conclusion. The first clue was given by Skeen, when he tells Cassian in Episode 5 that Cinta “ already sharing his diaper “. The other clues were seen when Cassian visibly tried to catch Cinta’s eye when she was bandaging him, or when he offers her a drink—both times he is severely interrupted by Vel.

The last clue of episode 5: when Cassian reveals that he is in fact a mercenary, paid for his participation in the attack, it is towards Cinta that everyone turns, in order to ask him if Vel, the chief, had informed her.

In episode 6, it’s another brief moment that finally confirms their relationship: after the attack begins, when Vel has to go to the vault with the other team members and Cinta stays behind. guarding the prisoners, the two heroines exchange very touching words — they don’t know if they will be able to see each other again. And, above all, they hold hands.

We can regret the rather evasive way in which the series approaches the relationship. It is to be feared that many people will miss it, and that others will argue that it is only two very good friends (?). However, we must recognize one thing: this is the first time that we see in Star Wars a believable queer couple. And it’s great.

The gestures of tenderness of the two people towards each other (we have not mentioned them all in this article) are each time touching, and above all, they are fair. There is nothing that falls flat, feels forced, or is free.

We regret, however, that there were no kisses or another more explicit gesture that would have made it possible for everyone to understand the relationship between Vel and Cinta. We guess that the same relationship, but with heterosexual characters, would not have suffered from this lack. But we’re a long way from the slightly ridiculous scene at the end of Star Wars Episode IX, The Rise of Skywalkerin which two women kissed in the background for 0.02 seconds.

In any case, we hope that we will be able to see the relationship between Vel and Cinta develop in the next episodes – and above all, that they will find each other. At the end of episode 6, the two heroines are, indeed, separated: Vel left with Skeen, Nemik and Cassian after the theft, while we just see Cinta leaving the headquarters of the empire, dressed of a guard uniform. We hope that Star Wars will not be part of the long list of films and series that have killed off their queer characters.
