A new television series on Star Wars is coming to Disney+. Her name ? Andor. It’s the fourth to be produced for Disney’s subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform and the second to happen chronologically quite far in the past. The 12-episode first season arrives at the end of September. A second is expected in 2023.
Andor is one of the many projects in the making at Disney to bring the license to life Star Wars. The entertainment giant currently focuses most of its efforts on series (live action or animation), but Star Wars films are still planned in the longer term. But in video games too, there are a lot of titles in the works.
When the series Andor was it announced?
It was at the beginning of November 2018 that Lucasfilm, a subsidiary of Disney, announced its intention to launch the construction site of a new television series in live action, after The Mandalorian. But its production took a long time, due to the coronavirus pandemic, which broke out in the West around the same time, in the spring of 2020.
Whether Andor was the second series officially announced by Lucasfilm, it turns out that it will ultimately be the fourth to be released. In the meantime, two other works have been launched: The Boba Fett Bookwith seven episodes between late 2021 and early 2022, and the miniseries Obi-Wan-Kenobiwhich has six episodes, airing in May and June 2022.
What is the distribution ofAndor ?
Obviously, Andor could not have been done without the return of Diego Luna to the cast. The British-Mexican actor played Cassian Andor in the spin-off film RogueOne, released in 2016. The series bearing the name of the hero whose features he lends, his presence was absolutely essential. But we will also find some other known faces of the saga Star Wars.
It is certain that we will find Forest Whitaker, who also played in RogueOne, as Saw Gerrera, a rebel leader. Genevieve O’Reilly also returns as Mon Mothma: she played this rebel leader and galactic senator in episode III, Revenge of the Sith (2005) and RogueOne. The other recruits are new faces for the saga.
Among the names that can be mentioned are Stellan Skarsgård (Dunes, Will Hunting, Chernobyl), Alex Lawther (The Last Duel, The French Dispatch, The End of the F***ing World), but also Kyle Soller, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough and Adria Arjona. The characters they embody are new or their identity remains to be discovered in the series.
What story for the series Andor ?
Andor is supposed to be a spy thriller ” who ” will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire “. It will focus on Cassian Andor, one of the protagonists of RogueOnewhich also happens to be the first — and currently the best — spin-off film on Star Wars from the Disney era.
According to Disney, Andor ” will explore a new perspective on the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series tells the story of the budding rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved in it. It is a time filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to make him a rebel hero. »
Where is Andor compared to movies?
For obvious script reasons, Andor can’t happen after the movie RogueOne. It is therefore before the series will take place, five years before the events of the feature film. It is a series that takes place broadly between Episode III (Revenge of the Sith) and IV (A new hope), but being much closer to the second than to the first.
RogueOne takes place just before A new hope : the end of the first film initiates the beginning of the second. Consequently, Andor is a series that takes place five years before A new hope. This is the second live action series to take place during this period. The other is the miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobiwhich also takes place between Episodes III and IV.
A series with what dramatic stakes?
This is one of the difficulties when preparing a prequel to a work: we know in advance that certain characters will risk absolutely nothing, which will have the effect of defusing certain dramatic springs. We already know that Cassian Andor, Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma will not die in the series. As for the others, they are unknown characters for the time being.
As for the narrative, we are faced with a rather similar problem: we suspect that the series Andor will not be able to chronicle the fall of the Galactic Empire, as its end does not take place until much later. Presumably, the series will be forced to limit itself to relatively secondary stakes. It remains to be seen if the writers will be able to create some surprises.

Lucasfilm began at the end of December 2020 to share videos on Andor, first with a preview of the set and behind the scenes and then, on May 26, a first look. The first trailer was released on August 1. At the same time, the various social media of Star Wars are increasingly showering the public with photos and information.
When the series Andor does she go out?
Series Andor will be available from September 21, 2022, with the release of the first three episodes, then another at the rate of one per week. This release is relatively far from two other highly anticipated super-productions: House of the Dragon on the side of HBO and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on the side of Amazon Prime Video.
The series is to have 12 episodes for season one. A second season is in the works, which should also have 12 episodes. This second part will be the last, because it is expected that the adventures will bring Cassian Andor to the events of RogueOne. Presumably, season 2 will be released at the end of 2023, but nothing has been formalized yet.
