Andor: Have you noticed this villain from Harry Potter in the Star Wars series?

If you’ve watched the first 3 episodes of “Andor”, the latest Star Wars series from Disney+, you’ve met Maarva Andor and you may have recognized her performer, a certain Fiona Shaw… That comes back to you?

Warning, spoilers. The following article reveals key plot elements of “Andor” Season 1.

Yes, her face is familiar and yes, you know her! With more than 82 credits to her credit, Fiona Shaw is no beginner. Surely you have seen her in one of her many film or television roles, such as in Killing Eve or Fleabag for example, two roles for which she received an Emmy nomination, and even a BAFTA for the first series .

But for several years, Fiona Shaw played a cult character who marked an entire generation: that of Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter saga! How can we forget Petunia Dursley née Evans, the older sister of Lily Potter who inherits little Harry who has become an orphan, the one who made life hard for the young hero for (too) many years simply because she was jealous of her younger sister. It was not pretty and complicated.

Her last appearance as Petunia was in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 in 2010. But Fiona Shaw now belongs to another successful legendary franchise: Star Wars please.

It is indeed in episode 2 of season 1 of Andor, prequel series of Rogue One, that the Irish actress makes her debut in the skin of Maarva Andor, the adoptive mother of Cassian (Diego Luna). We thus learn that she meets for the first time the young “Kassa” (Antonio Viña) inside the wreckage of a ship on her native world of Kenari.

Asked about her role by The Hollywood Reporter, the actress spoke about why she thinks Maarva takes responsibility for this child: the latter’s people have just killed an officer of the Republic and “he would definitely be dead if she hadn’t brought him home. She saw him and thought, ‘He’s a spectacular kid.’ So she raised him as her own”, said Fiona Shaw.

And the comedian doesn’t blame her character for the adult Cassian turned disappointment and her friends and family.

She probably always acknowledged that because Kenari and his search for his sister are always on his mind, he never gave himself entirely to this mother.”, she continued. “So she did the best she could with him, and of course he’s a bummer because he can’t find his way. And he can’t find his way because he can’t find his way.

Fiona Shaw in “Andor” (2022)

So here is a new mythical saga of which the actress is now part… and she admitted it, she is delighted!

So I’m delighted to be part of it, and [Andor] is a truly sophisticated development of the entire Star Wars series. Tony wrote something complex, textured, emotional, assured and deep. […] He made it a domestic investigation in the middle of this very, very metallic universe. So it’s a great success.

But long before landing this key role, Star Wars had already changed the life of Fiona Shaw who also shared her first memory of the starry saga.

It struck me remarkably when I was 19 and first came to America. I had never been abroad. I went to Chicago to stay with a family whose daughter I knew was in college with me. And so we went to see Star Wars and I had never eaten at McDonald’s before. I had a McDonald’s and saw Star Wars, so my life changed. I saw it outdoors in Chicago in 1979. I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

The circle is complete.
