Google has just released a first developer preview of Android 13. Given the announced schedule, it could be that the new Android arrives earlier this year.
Each year, the development of the new Android takes place over several months. First launched in the form of a “Developer Preview” between February and March, the new version of the mobile OS is then entitled to a public presentation at the Google I / O conference, which usually takes place in May. Then follow several months of beta, with a launch between the end of summer and the start of the school year.
This year, Google could upset its calendar. According to the information he passed on to developers, Android 13 should arrive in beta in April (with an I/O earlier?) before launching in July. The first preview, reserved for developers, has been available since February 10.
We missed Tiramisu 🙁
Until 2019, Google used to give dessert names to its OS. The most notable are Donut, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Marshmallow or Oreo. Over time, Google has settled down and opted for version numbers. We had Android 10, Android 11 and Android 12, successors to Android Nougat.
In the settings, the first preview of Android 13 is codenamed “Tiramisu”, as revealed by 9to5google. In other words, within three years, the best dessert would have had the right to its Android. This missed opportunity makes us very sad.

For now, this first preview is mainly to prepare the ground for the developers. The XDA-Developers site, which loves to dig into the code of OSes, notably flushed out the possibility of customizing application icons according to colors or new settings related to privacy. Fortunately, the Android 13 branch that Google will present in April or May will be much richer in new features. In short, for the moment, we do not advise you to install it on your Google Pixel smartphone.
