Android 13 is here… if your phone is compatible

Google announced on Monday the new major update to its mobile operating system; Android 13 has therefore started rolling out to Pixel phones.

The announcement comes as Android 13 is being released as part of the Android Open Source Project, having been made available to beta testers, developers and then the general public since February and April, respectively.

Google reports that Android 13 will soon be available on phones made by its hardware partners. These partners are Samsung, Asus, HMD, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, Vivo and Xiaomi.

Android 13 better protects your privacy

Android 13 brings several key improvements and changes. Most notable, which you’ll notice as soon as you install the update, is that Material You and the custom themes that come with it have been extended, allowing third-party apps to take advantage of this feature.

Security has also been improved. In particular, it is now possible to choose which photos and videos you want to share with an application – and more simply accept or deny access to all your photos. The clipboard is erased after a certain time, to prevent applications from searching it to retrieve important or sensitive information recently copied. Finally, applications must now ask your permission to be able to send you notifications.

Spatial audio is now officially supported, paving the way for streaming 360-degree audio through supported hardware and streaming apps. You can also assign a language to specific apps if you speak multiple languages.

Available today… for some

If you have a Pixel 3 or newer in the Pixel lineup, Android 13 should be available today, or later this week. The update is indeed rolling out throughout the week, consistent with past rollouts.

If your smartphone is from another brand, for example Samsung or Motorola, Android 13 will be available… but we don’t know when yet. It all depends on the manufacturer, and how quickly they will implement these changes.

For some, it will be quick. For others, like owners of Samsung-branded smartphones, it will take longer. It is even possible that this update will finally be available at the beginning of the year 2023 – everything will depend on your model.
