This is a feature coming in Android 14 that should considerably ease your conscience when repairing your smartphone.

Just yesterday we presented one of the features most appreciated by Android 14 users, namely the ability to generate wallpapers using artificial intelligence. If the new version of Google’s operating system was published several weeks ago, it will obviously continue to be enriched over the coming months.

And, you can believe us, the future new feature of Android 14 which will interest us today could well be of service to you, particularly in the event of a problem with your smartphone.

Android 14: a new mode to protect your data?

Some time ago, the site Android Authority, through Mishaal Rahman, published a long article that was interesting to say the least. Well known on social networks, the analyst focused at length on one of the future new features that could be added to Android 14.

In the beta version of the operating system, from the Settings application, the latter was able to note the presence of lines of code referring to a mysterious repair mode. But what could it be exactly?

Personalization is a big part of Android 14 © Google

According to the explanations provided by Mishaal Rahman, the objective of such a mode would be to allow users to hide their personal data from their phone before sending it for repair.

This is how Android 14 repair mode works

Let’s assume that you have just accidentally dropped your Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, and that its screen has cracked. Before you send it in for repair, you’re going to make sure you reset it to factory settings, right? This will save you a lot of problems in the event that your smartphone falls into the hands of a repairer who wants to stick his nose in your things.

Well, with Android 14’s Repair Mode, you may no longer have to do all that. We’ll explain it to you.

Concretely, repair mode will allow you to simulate a factory reset by hiding your personal information from the eyes of repairers. In other words, your data will not be erased from the device, but only hidden by a new, completely empty data partition. Although they will always be saved on your device, your applications and other data will remain completely inaccessible to a third party.

For information, this function will use Dynamic System Updates (DSU), a feature introduced with Android 10. Finally, note that the repair mode, the deployment of which is expected for the month of December, will be, initially at least, reserved for Google Pixel users.
