From November 1, 2023, Android 14 will integrate an Identifier Manager. Thanks to it, application developers will be able to offer a connection to their service via passkey, instead of traditional passwords.

They are also intended to eventually replace the classic username/password combination. As a reminder, a passkey is an identification key containing encrypted data. It proves that you are the owner of the account you are trying to connect to. When you use it, your private keystored locally on the device, is compared to a public key, stored on servers. You then validate the connection via the biometrics (fingerprint or facial recognition), a coded or one plan.
Even if it is not perfect, the system is more secure than the current one, and this is why Google is increasingly pushing for the creation of passkeys. Android is no exception. Its latest version, Android 14, already supports passkeys in password managers. But it still remains to be integrated into as many mobile applications as possible, if not all. This is done with the deployment of a new feature on Android 14: the Credential Manager. On November 1, it will be accessible on all compatible smartphones.
Android Credential Manager makes it easy to integrate passkeys into all apps
As its name suggests, the Credentials Manager natively stores these, as well as your passwords and of course your access keys. The app’s API is available for developers to use integrate it into their authentication system. At the same time, Google is accelerating the migration by announcing the end of API support for other identification methods.
