Good news for users of the latest version of Android, which will soon be equipped with a very nice function (and particularly for photography enthusiasts).

You are aware that many social networks and instant messaging sites considerably compress the images that you share on the various platforms. Consequently, as soon as you want to send an image captured in Ultra HDR, the new image format developed by Google, it systematically loses the benefits provided by the latter.

In order to limit losses, the Mountain View giant has just announced support for Ultra HDR in Google Messages, only for Android 14 users.

Ultra HDR: when Android 14 magnifies your photos

Last May, Google explained to us how it intended to improve the quality of photos with Android 14. It was more precisely during its I/O conference that the Mountain View firm presented its new image format to us, which it called “Ultra HDR”. This then promised to obtain colors and contrast more vibrant than ever with the help of better image processing.

Moreover, this image format being backward compatible with JPEG files, it is able to display photos in Ultra HDR, including if they were initially recorded in SDR (provided, of course, that you have of a device with a compatible screen).

Until today, only the Google Chrome and Google Photos applications supported Ultra HDR in Android 14. But as reported to us by the specialized site Android Policea new app will be added to the list very soon, to the delight of users of the operating system.

Android 14: Ultra HDR arrives in Google Messages

According to information reported by our colleagues on the site Android Police, the Google Messages application will therefore be the next to welcome Ultra HDR. In other words, understand that recipients with a compatible device will be able to view photos sent in Ultra HDR from Google’s instant messaging application (via the RCS protocol).

For now, remember that only the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro support capturing photos in 10-bit Ultra HDR format. That said, there is no doubt that more devices will support this feature in the coming weeks and months.
