With Android 14, Google introduces a feature allowing you to deactivate screen animations when you type your PIN code. In fact, the operation is done much more discreetly and reduces the risk of leaking when you are in a public place. We explain how to activate it.
If for many users, biometric solutions have long replaced the good old PIN code to unlock their smartphone, some continue to use the latter. Out of habit or any other reason, this unlocking method remains as popular as it is… risky. Indeed, a malicious stranger can quite easily guess your PIN code by looking over your shoulder – then he will have a hard time getting hold of your finger to pass the fingerprint scanner.
To make matters worse, Android makes it somewhat easier for thieves by adding animations to the screen when you type your PIN code. In fact, each number appears highlighted when you press it, which serves as a very practical visual feedback, but also makes it even more visible from a distance. Fortunately, Android 14 will finally offer a solution, giving users the option of deactivating this visual feedback.
How to make your PIN more secure on Android 14
If you are one of the PIN code fans, we therefore advise you to activate this option which has just appeared in Android 14 as soon as the update is available on your smartphone – or, failing that, if you already have the beta of the OS on your Google Pixel. Here’s how to do it:
- Open them Settings
- Go to the section Security and Privacy
- Press on Lock Screen
- Tap the gear next to Screen lock
- Enable the option Improved PIN security (French name to be confirmed)

Once this option is enabled, the screen will no longer show an animation when you type your PIN. The lack of feedback may be disturbing at first, but you will greatly gain discretion when unlocking your smartphone in public.
