Android 15: release date, new features from Google, compatible phones… everything we know

The release of Android 15 is expected at the end of 2024, but this spring Google will present the major developments of its mobile operating system during its Google I/O conference. Release date, compatible smartphones… the first elements of the OS are already known.

Android 15 will be the next big step that Google will take with its mobile operating system. However, we will have to wait months before the general public can get their hands on it: the OS remains in development. It will not be available for several months. However, its main contours are beginning to emerge.

What are the main new features of Android 15?

Linking Android 15 with satellites

All the major developments of Android 15 have not yet been fully revealed, as the operating system is still in development. That said, several indications have been distilled. We know, among other things, that the OS will provide satellite connectivity, subject to having a smartphone with an appropriate chip.

Automatic storage optimization

Today’s smartphones generally contain enough storage space that you don’t have to worry about space. However. Android 15 also thinks about less equipped models, with an option that will automatically archive applications that are rarely or most used. This is to free up space.

Improved PDF reader

Progress on opening and displaying PDF documents in Android is also expected. Among the advances to expect, searching for text inside a file, annotations, filling out a form, or copying and pasting. Password-protected documents will also be better supported.

Screen recording detection, smoother NFC… and AI?

Other changes are also announced, such as a tool that will detect whether the screen is being recorded. On the NFC side, Google also plans progress in the user experience. And there’s also everything the company hasn’t revealed yet. In particular, the whole AI part is avoided… for now.

When will the Android 15 OS be presented?

The official presentation of Android 15 is expected during the annual conference organized by Google at its headquarters, on May 14, 2024. The new edition of Google I/O will be an opportunity for the group to go into detail about what awaits mobile users in a few months. Google I/O will be broadcast live.

Which smartphones are compatible with Android 15?

A first list of phones eligible for the preview version of Android 15 has been provided by Google. It should be kept in mind that this is by no means an exhaustive statement. Many other devices will be compatible in the coming months, but also after the release of Android 15 – this will depend on the planning of each manufacturer.

When should Android 15 be released?

The release of Android 15 is expected at the end of 2024, around the third or fourth quarter – this is what a forecast schedule from Google suggests. We can reasonably expect a launch around September, if we rely on the timeline and the dates already provided.

Between now and then, several deadlines will be met. After the release of the two preliminary versions, there will be:

  • four versions of the OS in beta in April, May, June and July:
  • the Google I/O conference in May;
  • stabilization of the platform from June;
  • the official release.

What is its code name?

It’s been several years now since Google decided to abandon nicknames for Android. Until 2018, the American company had the custom of taking the names of cakes or confectionery to designate each new major version of the OS, following alphabetical order. But in 2019, this tradition stopped.

Behind the scenes, however, these code names have not disappeared. We saw this with Android Tiramisu (Android 13), for example. We also saw it with Android 14 (Upside Down Cake). We also saw it with Android 15, which was also associated with a sweet treat: VanillaIceCream.
