Android: APK installation in Xiaomi’s sights?

Very popular thanks in particular to download portals dedicated to APKs (APK Mirror, APK Pure, etc.), APKs (for Android Package Kit) are a file format that makes it easy to download mobile apps. They are located outside the usual official stores, or even directly on the site of their publisher.

As reported 9to5 Google, Xiaomi would like to put a brake on their installation. Or at least one of the developers of the brand, which is unknown if it acts on its own initiative or really represents the Chinese manufacturer. Still, said developer has submitted a proposal to modify the Android Open Source Project, a “free” version of Android supported by Google and on which it relies to offer its operating system which aims to prevent users from install APKs on their devices. The reason invoked is due to the obscure notion of “protection of private resources”.

However, Google would not be in favor of this type of restriction, which would aim to impose the installation of apps through official portals such as the Play Store and presenting very little chance of success. 9to5 Google reports as well as internally, voices are raised against such a modification. Google developers report that limiting the installation of APKs to users of versions of Android dedicated to developers would be futile, little effort being required for an average user to use a similar version. It should also be remembered that Google is scrutinized by international authorities on compliance with competition rules.
