Google is about to open wide the floodgates of Play store. During I/O, the major conference dedicated to developersthe company announced a change in its pricing policy for mobile applications.
The mobile applications market is much less vibrant than at one time, but that doesn’t matter, Google is not going to let bad figures dictate its economic model. During Google I/O 2024, the search giant unveiled new pricing options for the Play Store with caps now approaching €1,000.
Too expensive ? Choose to pay in installments!
Until now, an app listed on the Play Store could not sell for more than €350 ($400). A limit which has now more than doubled since Google authorizes developers to charge up to €940 for downloading an application. In the help page which lists the countries where Google Play applications are distributed, we can actually see that the price of an application can now go up to $999.99 or the local equivalent, or €940 on the old continent.
Don’t panic, however, Google offers the possibility to those who want to charge a high price to their customers to spread the payment in several installments. So, rather than paying €940 in one go, you can split the bill into 12 payments of €79. A case ! It should be noted that this limit obviously does not concern subscriptions taken out via the Play Store, which can for a long time exceed €1000 billing with monthly subscriptions at €9.99.
Apple does better
While it’s a safe bet that almost no app will sell for that much, it still reflects Google’s desire to develop the mobile application market. With 3 billion active Android devices worldwide, the Mountain View giant wants to be prepared for all eventualities, even the most improbable. Undoubtedly, professional applications meeting very specific needs could come to tickle the limits of the Play Store.
For its part, Apple made a similar change in March 2023, but with a little more ambition since applications in its App Store can now display a price of up to €11,999. The most expensive application currently on the App Store is a piano tuner sold for €999.99 while on the Play Store it is a game for €350 with no other interest than showing that you have a lot money to spend.
