Would you like to replace the Google Assistant on your Android smartphone with an AI? Good news: it’s soon possible with Copilot.
In the latest beta version of its application, Microsoft makes its AI chatbot Copilot your default assistant, replacing Google’s built-in version. The novelty has been spotted Mishaal Rahmanwho shared it on X:

To do this, go to the Google Play Store and search for “Copilot”. At the very bottom of the Microsoft AI chatbot page, click Join in the section Try the beta. Then click on Participate to confirm your registration.
Once you’ve signed up for the beta program, download the Copilot app (if you haven’t already). You now have access to all the new features. You can then open your phone’s Settings app, then go to Applications > Choose default applications > Digital assistance app and select Copilot.
You can now launch Copilot by swiping diagonally from any corner of your screen, or by long-pressing the home button on your device.
The limits of a third-party application
Be careful though: Copilot being a third-party application, it does not benefit from full integration of the Google Assistant. For example, it does not have an automatic listening mode. So, it is not possible to call Copilot with your voice, like when you say “OK Google”. It also can’t take screenshots. Another major difference: Copilot will not appear in a bubble, like the Google Assistant. When you “call” Copilot, you actually open the app.
While Copilot can accomplish most of the traditional work of an artificial intelligence, it is currently incapable of performing certain tasks. For example, it doesn’t seem to be able to add an event to a calendar or open another app yet. These two tasks are very widely used, so Microsoft should probably add these capabilities to its AI soon.
Why choose Copilot?
For now, it’s mostly a question of potential. The AI developed by Google, now named Gemini, is still in its early stages. It is not as developed as that of Microsoft, more precise, in particular thanks to the various partnerships that the software giant has established with OpenAI. It is even possible that one day Copilot will host ChatGPT.
For the moment it is simply a beta version, which also explains why everything is not fully operational. But once Microsoft irons out the bugs and Copilot can be fully integrated into your Android smartphone, you might just be tempted to use the power of AI every day.
