Android smartphones will finally become more powerful than iPhones thanks to this chip


It looks like the upcoming Galaxy S25 will be much more powerful than the iPhone 16 Pro, if a new report is to be believed that claims to reveal the performance of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip.

In recent years, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors have largely closed the gap with Apple’s A-series chips in terms of performance. A new rumor from South Korea even suggests that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip could surpass the Apple A18 chip, which will power the iPhone 16.

Rumor claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will outperform the Apple A18 in several benchmarks. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to score 3,500 on Geekbench, while Apple’s A18 is unlikely to score more than 3,300. This would therefore be a first for a long time on Android. The rumor also says that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will have a better multi-core score and a faster GPU, but that was already the case for previous generations.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 promises to be super powerful

One of the reasons for the superior performance of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is the use of Oryon cores, which are custom ARM cores designed by Qualcomm. Previous Snapdragon chips used ARM-licensed cores. Oryon cores were developed by Nuvia, a company that Qualcomm bought in 2021, to compete with Apple, and are already used in the Snapdragon X Elite, for laptop PCs.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also be the first to benefit from 3nm engraving, as confirmed to us in a confidential document from Qualcomm. This means it will be more efficient and use less energy.

Qualcomm has confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be revealed in October. This chip will equip the next generation of Android flagships, such as the Galaxy S25 and the OnePlus 13. We can therefore expect that all of its smartphones will be faster than the next iPhone 16 Pro, if this rumor is confirmed.

However, the rumor also warns that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 might have some drawbacks, such as overheating and high power consumption. The main core of the chip will be clocked at 4.3 GHzwhich is much higher than the 3.30 GHz of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Cortex-X4 core. The report states that the chip can reach a voltage of 1.3V, which could cause thermal problems. Obviously, we imagine that Qualcomm will put in place solutions to reduce the power of the chip in the event of overheating.
