Angela Merkel: Chancellor asks citizens to stay at home

Chancellor Angela Merkel appeals to the common sense of the people: You have to "do everything so that the virus does not spread uncontrollably".

Germany is "in a very serious phase of the corona pandemic". Angela Merkel (66) has now communicated this in a new video message and appealed to the common sense. The number of new infections is increasing by leaps and bounds, "faster than at the beginning more than half a year ago". "Difficult months" were ahead. How winter and Christmas will turn out is up to the population.

Chancellor asks for sensible action

One must "do everything possible so that the virus does not spread uncontrollably". Every day counts. The individual citizen could contribute "a great deal" to reducing the number of infections again. The most important thing is to adhere to the "AHA" rule – that is, to keep the minimum distance, to wear mouth and nose protection and to adhere to the hygiene rules. However, one has to go further.

"If each of us now significantly reduces our encounters outside of our own family for a while, then it can be possible to stop and reverse the trend towards more and more infections," explains Merkel. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) currently had a new record reported infections. 7,830 people were newly infected.

"Please stay at home where you live"

"Meet with significantly fewer people, whether outside or at home," asks the Chancellor. "Refrain from any trip that is not really essential – any celebration that is not really necessary. Please stay at home wherever possible, wherever possible."

Merkel knows that this "not only sounds harsh", but is also "a difficult renunciation" in individual cases. But you do this for yourself and only temporarily. "For our own health and that of all those whom we can save from illness." Consideration and common sense are currently the most effective means of combating the pandemic.
