The Federal Cabinet presented the outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel with a special farewell present on Wednesday.

Angela Merkel (67, CDU) was duly adopted in Berlin on Wednesday (November 24) at what is likely to be her last cabinet meeting in office as Federal Chancellor. Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz (63, SPD) presented the outgoing Chancellor with a colorful bouquet of flowers, which Merkel received with a beam of joy.

In addition, the cabinet gave the politician a bonsai tree with the name “Cornus controversa ‘Carpe Diem'” (Eng. “Seize the day”). Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (48, CDU) and Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (53, SPD) shared several photos of the present on Twitter.

“An interesting tree – colleague Svenja Schulze and I consider – with a bit of humor – whether we should both have planted a forest from it.” The tree is “a farewell gift from the Federal Cabinet to the Chancellor,” writes Klöckner. Afterwards, the members of the Merkel cabinet gathered again for a joint photo on the stairs in the Chancellery.
